Road to Medical School

As you may know I am applying to medical school. I have not been accepted yet but I want to blog about somethings I have learned along the way. If you are thinking about medical school or starting to apply please continue to read....

You may have already heard this but apply early. I really mean this! It will make your life easy and higher your chances of getting in without you pulling out all your hair.

What do I mean apply early?

1. Take your mcat at least 1 month before you apply for medical school. Meaning you should have your score before you apply because this will help decide what schools to apply to. Furthermore, By having your scores ready when you are applying you can submit it early and medical schools will be able to look at it. When your application is not complete they put it on the incomplete "pile" until it is complete. Until then, they are sending secondaries to other applicants!

2. Write your personal statement at least 2 months before. This give you time to have other people look it. If writing is not your forte then you will need more time. It took me 3 months to write mine. To help with the writing process make a deadline and keep it. Start with a outline on key points/experiences you want to talk about then start to fill in the gaps. After a few edits you will have a decent rough draft. Be ready to re write your essay a few times! Make sure to make it "personal" not just a mirror of your resume.

3. Ask for letter of recommendations after each experience. Don't wait until you are applying to request them. And make sure to give at least 3 months before you want to submit your application. * Only ask people who you have worked/ volunteered/ shadowed for a good amount of time; and that you feel will write a strong letter of recommendation.

4. The application is not a secret! You can find the question on the AMAC website or in prep books and you can start woking/ gathering information for the application

5. Read books on getting in to medical school, talk to medical students, Doctors, and if your school has one get to know your pre med advisor

Good luck on your endeavors!
